On Thursday 4th September the Lord Mayor of Canterbury will unveil eight blue plaques, including tributes to Saint Augustine and Saint Hadrian on the outer wall at St Augustine’s Abbey in Canterbury (see picture attached). The location is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the unveilings will tell the 1400 YEAR history of the abbey.

It was always going to be remarkable honouring two religious giants, Saint Augustine and Saint Hadrian, with blue heritage plaques at the same site. But to unveil them along with 6 other blue plaque recipients, at a UNESCO World Heritage site on the same day, is a historic moment in public realm and for the city of Canterbury.
Dr Jak Beula, CEO of Nubian Jak Community Trust
English Heritage is proud to join with the Canterbury Society, the Canterbury Commemoration Society and the Nubian Jak Community Trust, in this act of commemoration. The new plaques speak powerfully of the figures who have shaped, and been shaped by this extraordinary place, over fourteen centuries.
Dr Jeremy Ashbee, Head Curator of Properties at English Heritage
The project is intended to add interest to the exterior of the wall of the Abbey, to remind/tell passers-by about the long and interesting history of the Abbey for over 1400 years. The Society is delighted with the outcome.
Reverend Brian McHenry, the Secretary of the Canterbury Commemoration Society
